The European Medical Center “UMMC-Health” celebrates its tenth anniversary. Today this is one of the most popular clinics, whose services are used by residents not only of Yekaterinburg, but also of other cities and regions of Russia. About 1,500 people visit the departments of the medical facility every day, and soon there will be twice as many patients.

Director for Strategic Development Artur Vorobiev talks about why the medical center is called a “smart hospital”, what principles are used to hire doctors there, and what unique departments will soon be open for children and adults.

Arthur Vladimirovich, tell us when the idea of ​​creating a multifunctional medical center in Yekaterinburg appeared and were there any difficulties in its implementation?

The first day of operation of our clinic was September 14, 2009, but the facility was conceived much earlier. Back in the late 90s, several doctors in Yekaterinburg took the initiative to create a multidisciplinary medical center, focused primarily on modern technologies in minimally invasive surgery. The idea wandered around different minds and at some point was conveyed to the General Director of UMMC Andrei Anatolyevich Kozitsyn. He supported the idea, and in 2005-2006 the design and then the construction of the main building of our center began - on Sheinkman Street, 113. The group of proactive doctors was then led by Mikhail Semenovich Sklyar, now the general director of UMMC-Health.

The main task was not only to organize the receipt of quality medical care for patients and to build business processes, but also to create a comfortable, friendly environment. I won't lie, it was difficult. We had to learn a lot ourselves and convey a lot of new things to the staff. All efforts of our team were aimed at creating a wide range of services.

- Why does the name of the center include the word “European”?

The idea of ​​this name belongs to our shareholders - the managers of UMMC-Holding. The fact is that we were given the task of meeting the best European standards in terms of service and patient care. Actually, this is how we differ from public hospitals, where little attention is usually paid to the comfort of patients and the creation of a friendly environment.

German specialists provided us with great assistance both in terms of technology and in terms of creating comfortable conditions for patients. We have maintained close ties with many of them for many years. We also studied the experience of US clinics, where great attention is also paid to the quality of service to people. Of course, there is no ideal result, but I think that we managed to create a friendly environment for patients and staff.

- The medical center was built according to the “smart hospital” principle. What does this concept mean?

As I already said, it was important for us to create a comfortable environment for patients, and it is created from little things. We use air purification technologies, we have excellent ventilation and there is no hospital smell at all. We pass the water through a complex system of filters. Thanks to modern equipment, we control air humidity and temperature. All vital processes of the hospital are monitored and managed in real time. A unified information space has been created at the medical center. All this is a “smart hospital”.

Another task that the center always sets for itself is the development of high technologies. How did you move in this direction?

Almost every year we introduced some new products. In particular, diagnostic equipment - primarily modern computer tomography systems, magnetic resonance imaging, equipment for ultrasound, radiation, and endoscopic diagnostics. We were one of the first to introduce laser technologies into the work of urologists, gynecologists, and dentists.

Today our equipment “park” is one of the most modern and efficient in the region. But what was important was not the amount of equipment, but that doctors could use it 100%, just like in leading European centers. And we did it.

Considering that you constantly have new devices and they are mostly foreign-made, you probably have to send specialists to Europe for training?

Yes. In general, we have three areas of training for doctors. The first is a system of permanent and continuous medical education. The second is the participation of our specialists in major medical congresses and scientific symposiums. And the third is training in specific skills in leading educational centers. Our doctors travel around the world for internships to learn how to perform certain medical procedures and operations.

- Perhaps now your specialists can train their colleagues from other cities and regions?

This is already happening. About once a month at our base we conduct various medical master classes and trainings. They are carried out both by visiting specialists and by our doctors for their colleagues from other medical institutions. These include master classes on traumatology, gynecology, surgery, and mammology.

Now we are obtaining a license for educational activities and in the future we will train specialists in a qualified manner and award them the appropriate certificates and diplomas. We plan to open the training center after the second stage of our medical center is put into operation.

By the way, tell us more about this: how many facilities are there at UMMC-Health now and what will happen in the second phase?

Over ten years, our center has grown to 14 separate medical facilities.

A year after the opening of the first building, in 2010, the children's clinic opened its doors. A year later, the Center for Chinese and Tibetan Medicine was opened. Next is the Dental Care Center, several clinics in different parts of Yekaterinburg. And recently we opened a family clinic on Malysheva Street.

The decision to build the second stage of the UMMC-Health center was made in 2014. Today its beautiful building adorns Sheinkman Street.

      This will be a large multifunctional center, which will become our head building. It will actively develop the obstetric area: an antenatal clinic, a maternity hospital, and a department of assisted reproductive technologies.      

It will also house a children's medical center, which will house Russia's first non-governmental department of pediatric surgical care with its own hospital and operating unit. In addition, a department for the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases in children will be opened in the new phase.

In addition, there is a therapeutic block - it will have a clinic for adults, a hospital and a medical rehabilitation department.

Thus, our buildings on Sheinkman will be a single whole. This will be a “medical town” in which people will be provided with medical care in all areas of medicine from the pregnancy planning stage to old age.

- Where do you find qualified doctors and what requirements must they meet?

We now have more than 1,000 people working in our clinic, over 400 of them are doctors. Finding doctors is really very difficult.

People are not rushing into private medicine, as it might seem. We have our own requirements, which are no lower than in government institutions. Doctors in private medical centers often work even more than their colleagues in public ones. However, there is no big difference in salary.

The main difference is the nature of the work. For example, in the state system they give 15 minutes to see a patient. We have 40-50 minutes or more: exactly as long as needed. During the appointment, the patient must answer all his questions. Our doctors talk a lot with patients, try to explain and motivate them for treatment and the formation of a “healthy lifestyle”.

Therefore, our main requirement for doctors is that they must be able to empathize with patients and show empathy for each patient. The “come, cut and go” principle does not work in private clinics. If a doctor, even when he has excellent medical skills, is not able to understand the patient and take his side, then he has to part with him.

That is why it is even more difficult for us to find personnel than for public hospitals. There are no queues of specialists coming to us, so we proactively look for personnel ourselves. Doctors come to us from the Chelyabinsk, Kurgan regions, Perm region, and from Central Russia.

We have an employee adaptation program, a mentoring program, when a senior doctor helps and explains our principles to newly arrived colleagues. We provide them with training on how to communicate with patients.

Arthur Vladimirovich, Yekaterinburg is a city in which there are quite a lot of private clinics. What is the position of UMMC-Health in a competitive environment?

I believe that we are well positioned in the market. Today, 1400-1500 people a day contact our units. That is, about half a million per year. And with the opening of the second stage, the number of patients will at least double.

These are good indicators for Yekaterinburg. Moreover, among our patients, only about 50% are residents of the Ural capital - the rest come from other cities and regions. We dominate the market in many specialties – especially in MRI and ultrasound diagnostics. Many people come to us just for this.

     We perform more than 3,800 operations per year. Even a few public clinics perform such volumes. We succeed due to high labor intensity in operating rooms and good bed turnover. In our country, a person spends an average of 2.6 days in hospital. Because we operate with minimally invasive technologies and the patient simply does not need to stay in the hospital for a long time. More than 4 thousand people a year pass through our hospital with a capacity of 40 beds.

   For example, in areas of mass development, which is carried out by the UMMC holding, we purchase housing for our specialists. The program provides for different options for its use - rental, provision for official use, and rental with possible future transfer into ownership.   

We pay great attention to social responsibility towards personnel, which is typical in general for the enterprises of the UMMC holding. We work a lot on the corporate environment and corporate spirit. We are already forming dynasties and families. This is part of our living organism, which grows and becomes prettier, and, I hope, will continue to develop in the future.

In conclusion, let me express my gratitude to the people who entrusted us with their health. I am confident that the UMMC-Health team will do everything possible for the health of our patients.
