  • fleas;
  • sarcoptic mites (a microscopic organism that feeds on the blood, plasma and epithelium of the dog);
  • lice eaters, etc.
  • effectively destroys insects that have not reached sexual maturity;
  • also remarkably eliminates sexually mature individuals.

This drug works as follows:

This product is applied to the animal’s withers because:

  • the animal is not able to lick the product;
  • in this place, extremely inactive absorption of substances by the skin occurs, which causes minimal penetration of the product into the animal’s body;
  • after some time, the drug is evenly distributed over most of the surface of the animal’s body, accumulating inside skin cells, glands that produce sebum, and hair follicles, which causes an exclusively contact effect on ticks.

Note: One treatment with Dana Spot-on provides your pet with protection from harmful insects; its duration will be a month to a month and a half.

According to the official information available about the drug, the corresponding hazard class is fourth, that is, this drug is low-hazard for animals. Therefore, many pet owners choose it, because using “Dana Spot-on” you don’t have to worry about your pet having:

  • skin irritation;

The drug lasts 1.5 months after one treatment

However, you should still follow some safety precautions when using this drug:

  • use the dosage prescribed by the doctor, or the one indicated in the instructions for the drug;
  • do not apply the drug near the animal’s eyes, as it may cause irritation of the mucous membranes;
  • do not allow the animal to lick the product;
  • Do not rub your own skin, eyes, etc. with hands stained with product.

Note: There is a list of living creatures for which the application of this drug is strictly contraindicated due to its high toxicity. Please avoid using drops on:

  • rabbits;
  • fish and other river, sea, and lake inhabitants;
  • bees.

This is what the ampoule looks like

The high popularity of this product is explained by some of its unique distinctive features. This is about:

  1. First of all, you must open the package and take out the ampoule from the box, which, in fact, you will apply the product to the animal’s skin.
  2. The tip of the removed ampoule needs to be cut off to open the way for the product to flow out.
  3. Feel the animal's withers (the place on the back where the neck meets the back) and move the fur in different directions in this place so that a strip of skin is exposed to you.
  4. Apply along the animal's spine directly to the skin. It can be a dot applique, or it can be a single strip.

“Dana Spot-on” for dogs: this is what the instructions look like

When applying the product, it is very important to follow the dosage recommended by veterinarians and manufacturers of the drug. Let's see what it will be like in the table below.

If you need to remove an ixodid tick from an animal’s body that has already attached itself to it, do this.

  1. Apply a few drops of Dana to the site where it penetrates the skin and wait half an hour.
  2. After half an hour, the tick will either fall off on its own, or you can unscrew it very carefully with tweezers. The most important thing to avoid is tearing off the head of the pest and getting it stuck in the skin.

If you are fighting demodex mites that have infected the ears of an animal, you must follow the instructions below.

  1. Clean the ears with a special product or antiseptic to remove accumulated secretions, dirt and fallen hairs.
  2. Place approximately 3-5 drops of the product into each ear.
  3. Massage the dog's ear at the base on both sides, as if folding it in half.

Dana drops also help with demodicosis, otodectosis, etc.

Provided that the damage to microscopic mites has occurred in other areas of the body, apply the product to the affected areas and distribute it evenly. To avoid licking the drug, put a muzzle on the animal.

Contraindications and possible side effects

In our articles we often mention that there is no medical drug in the world that does not have side effects and contraindications. Of course, with a quality product they are reduced to a minimum, but they still occur. So, when using these insectoacaricidal drops, it is very important to take into account the following contraindications:

  • the drug should not be used on pregnant dogs;
  • sick and weak animals can react much more acutely to the drug, so hold off on flea treatment in this case;
  • This medicine should not be used simultaneously with the treatment of a dog with an illness of infectious etiology;
  • it is strictly forbidden to use animals whose age does not exceed 10 weeks from birth for treatment;
  • the skin to be treated must be dry and free of any visible damage before applying the product;
  • within 48 hours after applying the product, there is no need to bathe the animal in plain water, much less wash it with special cleansers.

Nausea is one of the possible side effects when using the drug.

Now let's turn our attention to potential side effects, which are rare, but still sometimes appear in particularly sensitive animals or those dogs whose owners incorrectly calculated the dosage of the drug.

  1. Nausea and vomiting.
  2. Excessive saliva production.
  3. Muscle cramps.
  4. Various allergies and skin irritations.

To ensure that your dog gets better without suffering one of the side effects, after the above-mentioned time has passed, give him a bath with shampoo. This way you will remove the remaining medicine from her, which no longer provides any benefit.

Owners who are particularly sensitive to the issue can also reduce the level of intoxication in the animal’s body to a digestible level by giving it a large amount of water.

Note: These medications are strictly not recommended for use with other drugs of similar action to avoid overdose. The manufacturer does not establish such prohibitions regarding pharmacological agents with other properties.

Let's sum it up

The common name of the drug is Dana Spot-on. Available in the form of a transparent yellow solution, designed for external use in veterinary medicine. The main active substance is fipronil, excipients are citric acid, isopropyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol, dimethylformamide. Release form: pipette tubes (packed in 0.5, 1 and 1.5 ml) or bottles with a dropper nozzle of 15 ml.

The drug should be stored in its original packaging, in a dark, dry place, away from any food or drinks. The temperature regime at the storage location must be maintained at +2 – +25 degrees. If storage conditions are met, the product's shelf life will be 24 months from the date of issue. After the cut-off date, applying the drug to an animal is strictly prohibited. Try to keep Dan Spot-on in places inaccessible to small children, and unused remains of the drug must be disposed of in accordance with the relevant instructions and legal requirements.

The drops are intended for the prevention and control of pests - lice eaters, ticks, fleas. It is noteworthy that the action of this product is equally effective for ticks of different families, so the drops are considered universal. In addition, they are used for preventive purposes to prevent the appearance of uninvited “guests”.

Pharmacological properties

The product belongs to the group of insectoacaricidal. The main active ingredient, fipronil, has a detrimental effect on fleas, lice, ticks and lice of the sexually mature stage. The principle of action of the substance is to block insect receptors, leading to disruptions in the mechanism of impulse transmission of the insect's nervous system, as a result of which the arthropod develops paralysis, and then death.

After the drops are applied to the animal’s skin, the active substance, without entering the bloodstream, quickly spreads throughout the skin and hair, gradually accumulating in the upper layers of the epidermis and hair follicles. The effect of the drug is observed 12 hours after application and lasts for up to 30 days.

If we talk about the degree of impact on the body, then this liquid is one of those that pose a low danger. If the recommended dosage is observed, the drops do not have a negative effect on the skin.

Doses and method of administration

The active effect of the product begins 12–24 hours after it was applied, so when going for a walk, try to treat your pet in advance. To combat existing insects, for example, ticks, drops are applied directly to the pest (as a rule, the tick disappears on its own after half an hour).

Contraindications and side effects

Considering the low toxicity of the product, it can be used even for puppies that have reached a weight of 2 kg. Treatment of pregnant and lactating bitches is not recommended, in order to avoid possible pathological manifestations in the offspring, do not apply drops to a sick animal or one that has recently suffered from a disease.

Side effects from the use of Dana are extremely rare and manifest themselves in the following:

  • increased salivation;
  • shiver;
  • lacrimation;
  • minor allergic manifestations.

Precautionary measures

When applying Dan drops to your pet, follow the generally accepted rules: do not let the animal swallow the product (and, of course, do not do it yourself), avoid contact with your skin and mucous membranes. After handling your dog, wash your hands thoroughly. If you notice signs of hypersensitivity in an animal to the components of the drops, immediately wash it with shampoo and contact a veterinary clinic.

Storage conditions

As already mentioned, the drug should be protected from sunlight, protected from hypothermia and overheating. It is best to ensure storage in a dry, dark place, separate from food, where the air temperature does not fall below 2 degrees Celsius and does not rise above 25 degrees. Keep the drug away from children.

Pharmacological properties:
Dana® Spot-on belongs to the insectoacaricidal drugs of the phenylpyrosol group.
Fipronil, which is part of the drug, has pronounced insectoacaricidal activity against the preimaginal and imaginal phases of development of fleas (Ctenocephalides canis, Ctenocephalides felis), lice (Linognathus setosus), lice (Trichodectes canis), sarcoptes (Sarcoptes canis, Sarcoptes vulpis, Notoedres cati , Otodectes cynotis, Psoroptes cuniculi), ixodes (Ixodes ricinus, Ixodes scapularis Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Dermacentor reticulatus, Dermacentor variabilis) and demodicosis (Demodex spp.) ticks.
The mechanism of action of fipronil is to block GABA-dependent arthropod receptors, disrupting the transmission of nerve impulses, which leads to paralysis and death of insects and ticks.
After applying the drug to the skin, fipronil, practically without being absorbed into the systemic bloodstream, spreads throughout the animal’s skin and hair, accumulates in the epidermis, hair follicles and sebaceous glands, providing a contact insectoacaricidal effect, which manifests itself after 12-24 hours and continues for 4- 6 weeks after a single treatment of the animal.
In terms of the degree of impact on the body, Dana® Spot-on is classified as a low-hazard substance (hazard class 4 according to GOST 12.1.007-76), in recommended doses it does not have a skin-irritating, skin-resorptive or sensitizing effect; if it gets into the eyes, it causes mild irritation . The drug is toxic to rabbits, bees, as well as fish and other aquatic organisms.

Application procedure:
Dana® Spot-on is prescribed to dogs and cats from 12 weeks of age for the treatment and prevention of entomosis caused by fleas, lice and lice; acaroses caused by sarcoptoid, ixodid and demodectic ticks, fur-bearing animals - for the treatment and prevention of otodecosis.
A contraindication for use is individual intolerance to the components of the drug, including a history of it. Patients with infectious diseases and recovering animals, dogs weighing less than 2 kg cannot be treated. Auricular use of the drug (for ear scabies) in case of perforation of the eardrum is not allowed.
Dana® Spot-on for the treatment and prevention of entomosis, as well as the protection of dogs and cats from attacks by ixodid ticks, is used by animals once by drip application (“spot-on”) onto dry, intact skin in places inaccessible for licking (the area of the back between the shoulder blades or neck area at the base of the skull), choosing a pipette of the required volume, taking into account the type and weight of the animal being treated in the doses indicated in the table:

In order to prevent re-infestation by fleas, the animals' bedding is replaced or treated with an approved insecticidal preparation in accordance with the instructions for use.

The acaricidal effect of fipronil begins 24 hours after application of the drug; therefore, treatments should be carried out no later than 24 hours before the animal is supposed to walk in places where ticks may live (parks, squares, forests).

To destroy ixodid ticks on the body of an animal, the drug in an amount of 1-2 drops is applied to the tick and the place of its attachment to the skin. If the tick does not fall off spontaneously within 20-30 minutes, it is carefully pulled out of the body and destroyed.

To treat dogs, cats and fur-bearing animals with otodectosis (ear scabies), the external auditory canal is cleaned of scabs and crusts, then 3-5 drops of the drug are instilled into each ear, the auricle is folded in half lengthwise and its base is massaged. The treatment is repeated 2-3 times with an interval of 5-7 days. If necessary, the course of treatment is repeated.

The drug must be administered into both ears, even if clinical signs of the disease are detected in only one ear.

When dogs and cats are affected by sarcoptic mange, notoedrosis or demodicosis, the drug is applied in a thin layer to the affected areas of the body, previously cleared of scabs, with a swab from the periphery to the center, covering borderline healthy skin up to 1 cm, in the doses indicated in the table. In severe cases of the disease, it is recommended to treat the animal in a comprehensive manner using pathogenetic and symptomatic medications. Treatment is carried out 3-5 times with an interval of 7-10 days until the animal’s clinical recovery, which is confirmed by two negative results of acarological studies.

Animals with large affected areas are treated in two doses with an interval of 1 day, applying the drug first to one and then to the other half of the affected body surface.

To prevent licking of the drug, animals are put on a cervical collar, a muzzle, or the jaws are closed with a loop of braid, which are removed 20-30 minutes after applying the drug.

Do not apply the drug to wet and/or damaged skin, bathe the animal in open water, or wash it with detergent for 48 hours after treatment.

In case of an overdose of the drug, the animal may experience excessive salivation, muscle tremors, and vomiting. In this case, the drug is washed off with water and detergent and general measures are used to remove it from the body.
No specific effects of the drug during its first use and discontinuation were identified.
For pregnant and lactating females, Dana® Spot-on is used, if necessary, under the supervision of a veterinarian. Kittens and puppies under 12 weeks of age cannot be treated with the drug.
Violations of the drug use regimen should be avoided, as this may lead to a decrease in its effectiveness. If the next treatment is missed, it should be carried out as soon as possible, in the same dose.
When using the drug in accordance with these instructions, side effects and complications in animals, as a rule, are not observed. In some animals, with individual hypersensitivity and signs of skin irritation and allergic reactions, the drug should be washed off with water and detergent and, if necessary, desensitizing therapy should be carried out.
Dana® Spot-on should not be used together with other insectoacaricidal drugs for treating animals.
The drug is not intended for use in food producing animals.

Prevention measures:
When working with Dana® Spot-on, you should follow the general rules of personal hygiene and safety precautions provided for when working with medications.

Empty pipettes and bottles of the drug must not be used for household purposes; they are placed in a plastic bag and disposed of with household waste. Children should not be ironed or allowed to come into contact with treated animals for 24 hours after applying the drug. People with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug should avoid direct contact with Dana® Spot-on.

If allergic reactions occur or if the drug accidentally enters the human body, you should immediately contact a medical facility (have instructions for use or label with you).

Video instructions for using drops on the withers:

Composition and action

The main active ingredient of Dan is diazolin. This is an insecto-ascaricidal substance that has a contact-intestinal effect. Activity is achieved 12–24 hours after the treatment procedure. Localized in hair follicles, sweat glands, wool and skin. Penetrates into the blood in small quantities. Thanks to constant sweating, the protective layer is constantly renewed. Given instantly and for a long time.

Contraindications for use

Almost all insecticidal agents have contraindications and should be used with caution.

Caring owners consult a veterinarian before doing this. Dan drops cannot be used if:

  • kittens are less than 10 weeks old;
  • the animal is sick or weakened for other reasons;
  • Pregnant and lactating cats should look for another remedy;
  • there is an allergy to the components included in the composition;
  • the residual effect of the previous drug has not expired.

Thus, it is necessary to assess the health status of cats, do not exceed the dosage, and do not apply in parallel with other insecticides. If the animal is allergic, it is better not to drip the drug.

Undesirable consequences

The dosage is chosen so that it turns out and does not have a negative effect on animals. Even if accidentally licked, there is no danger to health.

However, sensitive cats may experience reactions such as:

  1. Lethargy;
  2. Loss of appetite;
  3. Nausea;
  4. Vomiting;
  5. Increased salivation;
  6. Trembling all over the body;
  7. Skin redness, itching, irritation.

Basically, all side effects go away on their own after some time. If the condition continues to worsen, the help of a veterinarian will be required. Manufacturers claim that Dan contains substances that prevent inflammation and allergic reactions.

Advantages

Very convenient to apply. Doesn't take much time. And it doesn’t cause any particular difficulties. You can apply it to the back in any position of the animal: when it is standing, lying or sitting.

Processed only once a month. There is no need to constantly bathe your pet with shampoos and torment you with water treatments. Because by their nature, cats do not like water.

Affordable price. The product can be purchased at any veterinary pharmacy or specialty store for animals. The average cost of a package is 155 rubles.

Flaws

  • Dana is a rather aggressive remedy. In isolated cases, the behavior of animals after treatment remains the same. They experience discomfort for at least 1 week, or even more. Therefore, it should not be used on sick or weak pets.
  • Do not use on kittens under 10 weeks of age. You have to select 2 products at once: for cats and kittens.
  • Not for use by pregnant or lactating animals.
  • Causes significant skin irritation, which may cause scratching, scratching and infection.
  • Does not affect eggs. This situation is complicated by the fact that it is unusual for fleas to lay eggs in one place. They do this directly on the animal, and the eggs roll down. If this happens indoors, then a new generation of fleas will quietly mature on the floor, absolutely unharmed.

Active substance and mechanism of action

Dana flea drops contain either fipronil or diazinon.

Despite the differences between these substances, the mechanism of their insecticidal action is similar. Penetrating into the insect’s body, these substances disrupt the process of impulse transmission between nerve cells. This causes muscle tremors and disorientation. Insects die from paralysis of the nervous and muscular systems.

Important! Both substances are classified as low-hazard in relation to warm-blooded animals. But increasing the dose of a substance in any drug can have a toxic effect.

In my private home there are always from 3 to 5 cats and kittens living, so the problem of fleas and ticks is more familiar to me than anyone else. I use Dan drops. They help well. But some cats become allergic to them. Therefore, I use it with caution.

Dan drops for fleas. Instructions and reviews

Dan drops can be used for both cats and dogs. Animals must be 12 weeks of age (not younger!). Dan flea drops for cats and dogs are used to combat insects that have already settled on the animal’s body and to prevent re-infestations. Dan drops are also used to treat otodectosis, i.e. mites of a certain type that settle in the ears of animals.

Dan drops against fleas for dogs and cats are applied dropwise to dry skin. Make sure there is no damage to the animal's skin. The application area should be inaccessible to the pet for licking. Drops are applied to a point at the base of the skull and between the animal’s shoulder blades. The volume of the pipette and the amount of drug depends on the weight of the animal.

Doses for using Dana drops against fleas and other insects

For adult dogs and small puppies:

  • up to 10 kg 1.5 ml 1 pipette x 1.5 ml
  • 10 - 20 kg 3.0 ml 3 pipettes x 1 ml*
  • 20 - 40 kg 4.5 ml 3 pipettes x 1.5 ml*
  • over 40 kg 6.0 ml 4 pipettes x 1.5 ml*

For adult cats and small kittens:

  • from 1 - 3 kg 0.5 ml 1 pipette x 0.5 ml
  • more than 3 kg 1.0 ml 1 pipette x 1.0 ml

The effect of the drug lasts several weeks. Repeated treatments are necessary only in extreme cases. The number of monthly treatments should not exceed one. You can treat animals more than twice a month, but only if you wash them frequently with warm water and soap or shampoo.

The effect of the drug begins 24 hours after application to the skin of the animal. Therefore, if you take your dog for a walk, treat it with drops in advance. For the best effect, the dog or cat must first be washed with warm water and medicated flea shampoo, and then applied with Dan drops.

To destroy mites, drops must be applied directly to the insect or their clusters. As a rule, the ticks fall off on their own after 20-30 minutes.

Treatment of ear scabies (otodectosis) involves instilling drops (3 - 5 drops) of Dana into the ear canal. But first, the ears need to be cleaned. In total, you need to do 2 or 3 treatments with an interval of 5-7 days. It is important to apply drops to both ear canals, even if one of them is completely healthy. After all, mites can move from a treated ear to an untreated ear. Dan drops should be used to treat otodectosis only if the animal’s eardrum is not damaged.

If the animal is infected with sarcoptic mange, notoedrosis or demodicosis (caused by mites), then the drug is applied using a swab directly to the scabs. Treatment of the damaged skin surface is done from the periphery to the center, including healthy areas.
