Cup for menstruation. Pros and cons of using a menstrual cup. It's not hygienic

How to insert a menstrual cup?

The menstrual cup is inserted into the vagina to collect menstrual fluid. When inserting the cup, you must:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly. If necessary, apply a water-based lubricant to the cup and vagina.
  2. Sit or stand in a comfortable position with your legs wide apart, or place one foot on the toilet.
  3. Fold the bowl (see below for details on how to fold the bowl)
  4. Take the cup so that the rim is at the top and the tail is at the bottom, and insert it into the vagina.

How do I know if the menstrual cup is inserted correctly?

There are several clear signs that your menstrual cup is not inserted correctly, and the main sign is leakage. If the cup is leaking, it is likely that it was not inserted correctly, and you may need to repeat the cup insertion process several times before you understand how it works.

Another sign of an incorrectly inserted menstrual cup is discomfort. If you feel something cutting into your vagina or that the cup is not deep enough into your vagina, you may have inserted the cup incorrectly. Inserting the cup correctly takes some practice, but you'll know you've mastered the skill when the cup doesn't leak and you can't even feel it inside.

I insert a menstrual cup, and the tail sticks out of the vagina, what should I do?

In some cases, the tail of the menstrual cup may stick out from the vagina. This can happen because the tail is too long (in which case it can be trimmed), the cup is too long, or is not inserted deep enough into the vagina. The best strategy for this problem is to trim the tail or reinsert the cup to make sure it is deep enough.

Can lubricant be used to ease the insertion of a menstrual cup?

Yes, you can use lubricant to help with cup insertion, however, you should only use non-toxic, water-based lubricants approved for use with intimate care products (something like ). Do not use vegetable oils or any other unnatural lubricants as this may damage the menstrual cup and put you at risk of various vaginal infections.
|

I find it difficult to master the technology of inserting a menstrual cup, is this normal for beginners?

Yes. It is a completely common and normal situation when a new user of menstrual cups experiences problems inserting the cup. This process requires some skill, which is often mentioned in menstrual cup reviews and FAQs. It is important that you understand that everything is surmountable, you just need a little patience and practice.

It feels like the cup is about to fall out, what should I do?

If you feel like your menstrual cup is not securely attached and is about to fall out, ask yourself this. Have you inserted the cup deep enough into your vagina? Perhaps you bought a bowl? Do you have a long bowl?

You can try inserting the cup again to make sure it is inserted deep enough and also opened correctly (this may solve the problem immediately). If you have actually inserted the cup correctly, then you need to determine whether you have chosen the right size, and if you made a mistake, buy a new cup of the correct size or another shape that better suits the requirements of your body.

What is the best way to trim the tail of a menstrual cup?

The tail of the menstrual cup can always be trimmed for greater convenience. However, if you cut the tail carelessly, you risk damaging the bowl itself.

It is best to cut the ponytail in sections so as not to accidentally shorten it too much with one wrong move of the scissors. This way you won't damage the bowl and can trim the tail to the ideal length.

I don't feel comfortable walking around with a menstrual cup, what am I doing wrong?

If you have read about the main causes of discomfort when using a menstrual cup (wrong size, incorrect insertion, cup too hard, etc.), then you can attribute this discomfort to the manufacturer of the menstrual cup. In this case, you need to choose a different menstrual cup model to have a positive experience.

But think about what exactly caused the discomfort, for example, the bowl was too soft or hard, or an issue with the diameter, length, texture, shape of the tail or bowl. This will help you choose a bowl that you feel more comfortable with next time.

I have long nails, is it safe for me to use a menstrual cup?

Long nails and a menstrual cup are quite compatible. You must be careful not to scratch yourself as you insert the cup, but patience and persistence will guide you through the process.

It is also important for health and hygiene to wash your hands and under your fingernails to ensure that they do not introduce bacteria into the vagina, which can cause infections, irritation and discomfort.

Menstrual cups collect menstrual flow rather than absorb it like other intimate hygiene products. The bowl can be cleaned and reused, which means you can use one bowl for a long time. Most women note that menstrual cups leak less often and are more convenient to use. To use the cup, you must insert it into your vagina and make sure it is positioned correctly. After this, you can walk with the cup for up to 12 hours, after which it should be carefully removed and emptied. It takes some time to get used to the bowl, but overall the bowls are hygienic and environmentally friendly.

Steps

How to insert a menstrual cup

Purchase a menstrual cup from an online store or pharmacy. Menstrual cups are becoming more and more popular, so today they are easy to find in online stores and even in some pharmacies. Bowls come in different sizes, so you should check bowl reviews and size recommendations in advance.

Read the instructions that come with the menstrual cup you choose. Instructions for using the cup may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so it is always best to check their recommendations! This way you will know how best to handle the bowl you purchased.

Before touching the bowl, carefully wash your hands . You should wash your hands every time you plan to touch your intimate area to avoid introducing harmful bacteria there. Wash your hands in warm water and soap and be sure to lather for at least 20 seconds, and then rinse off the soap thoroughly.

    • To count down 20 seconds, you can sing the song “Happy Birthday to You.”
  1. Before first use, wash your menstrual cup with hypoallergenic soap. Most manufacturers require that the cup be thoroughly washed with soap before insertion. Use only hypoallergenic, fragrance-free soap. Lather your menstrual cup inside and out by soaking it in warm water, then rinse off all soap completely.

Find a comfortable position. Some women find it more comfortable to squat down, others place one leg on an elevated platform, and some find it more comfortable to insert the cup while sitting on the toilet with their legs spread wide apart.

Fold the cup for easier insertion. You can fold the bowl into a C shape, which compresses the hole and brings the opposite ends together. You can try the 7-fold, which is similar to the C-fold, but folds one edge slightly higher to make the bowl narrower. Another way to fold the bowl is to fold one edge inward. To do this, hold the bowl between your thumb and middle finger, and then press down on one edge with your index finger so as to fold that edge towards the center of the bowl.

    • The cup cannot be inserted without collapsing it, otherwise you will not be able to obtain a vacuum for the cup to successfully contain the secretions. Try different folding methods to see what works best for you.
    • To make the bowl fit easier, you can wet it a little.
    • Make sure that when inserting, the tail (or stem) of the cup is pointing down and the cup itself is pointing up.
  2. Relax your pelvic muscles as much as possible. Take a few deep breaths. If you are nervous or tense, the cup will be more difficult to insert. Try tightening your vaginal muscles and then relaxing them.

Point the cup towards your tailbone. With your other hand, spread the labia minora and majora. Gently insert the folded menstrual cup into your vagina, taking care to move from front to back rather than upward. Release the folded bowl and let it settle into place.

Rotate the bowl and make sure it is installed correctly. Grab the base of the bowl (not the tail) and twist, making at least one full turn. This will ensure that all edges of the bowl are fully opened and have a tight fit.

    • You may hear or feel a slight popping sound, which means the bowl has opened. If you are not sure whether the bowl has opened, try to feel its base. The base should be round or oval depending on your body structure.
    • If the bowl does not open, slightly pull it down by the tail, but so as not to pull it out completely.
  3. Pull the bowl slightly to break the vacuum. It is impossible to simply pull the bowl out because of the vacuum created, which is why you will first need to hook the base of the bowl, just above the stem, and squeeze it. By doing this you should break the vacuum, and it will be possible to remove the bowl. When removing, be careful not to turn the bowl over or tilt it too much.

Empty the cup by pouring its contents into the toilet. When you remove the bowl, pour its contents into the toilet. If you can't wash the cup right away, simply wipe it with toilet paper and reinsert it.

Wash the bowl with soap and water. If possible, rinse the bowl in the sink. Then lather it and rinse under warm running water. After this, the cup can be inserted.

    • It is best to use a mild, hypoallergenic, unscented soap.
    • If you are using a disposable menstrual cup, throw it away and insert a new one.

Cleaning the bowl and solving problems

  1. Sterilize the cup at the end of menstruation, boil it. Wash the bowl with soap and water. Then bring water to a boil in a small saucepan. Place the bowl in boiling water and boil it for 5-7 minutes to sterilize it. You may want to use a separate special pan for this purpose.

Cut off part of the bowl's tail if it bothers you. For some women, the tail of the cup seems too long and irritates the delicate skin of the intimate area. If this is the case, then you can simply cut off the tail in a way that suits you.

“You don't like cats?
Yes, you just don’t know how to cook them!”
TV series “Alf” (1986–1990)

When I first heard about menstrual cups, I immediately realized that the world had completely gone crazy. The passion for “magic” Chinese tampons, which heal everything possible, has just died down, and here it is – a new misfortune.

The idea of inserting some kind of container into the vagina to collect menstrual fluid seemed so wild to me that I had to study the issue in detail.

The first revelation was that the idea, to put it mildly, is not new. In 1930, Leona Chalmers (USA) patented the first cone-shaped cup for collecting menstrual fluid. Since then, the shape of the bowls has remained the same, only the materials for its manufacture have fundamentally changed. Instead of hard rubber, hypoallergenic medical silicone was used.

The first industrial production turned out to be unprofitable. The possibility of repeated use and the long service life of the “device” played a cruel joke on the innovators. The main advantage of the product became its main disadvantage. It is obvious that disposable hygiene products are more profitable for manufacturers: women are forced to buy them monthly, and some with severe menorrhagia even make purchases “on an industrial scale.”

Here's your first benefit!

The retail price of a menstrual cup today is about 1,500 rubles. A bit expensive? Compare with the cost of tampons or pads. If you change the pad/tampon as expected, i.e. every 4 hours, you will need 30 of them during one menstruation. For a year - 360, for the entire 37-year reproductive period (from 13 to 50 years old) for 444 menstrual bleedings, one woman will use 13,320 pads/tampons.

Do you love nature as much as I love it?

It is clear that this is a very, very approximate arithmetic, but just imagine the scale of the problem - over a year in our country more than 10 billion used hygiene products end up in landfills. The waterproof layer of pads and the superabsorbent of tampons are petroleum products. According to environmentalists, about 100 g of this flammable liquid is needed to release one gasket.

There are also tampons made from cellulose on the market. Russia has oil and there are quite a few forests, but many women, guided by the desire to preserve the environment, have decided to use menstrual cups. Naive? I don’t argue, but such a point of view exists and deserves respect.

How much blood are we losing?

Objectively indicating the amount of menstrual blood loss is a serious medical problem. Every woman evaluates her periods differently, but certainly no one will answer: “Oh, I lose about 40 ml of blood in five menstrual days.” Even with blood loss of about 200 ml per cycle, the patient can shrug her shoulders and say: “Yes, I have normal menstruation, like everyone else...”.

Reusable cups are graduated, their volume is precisely known, so with their help it is very easy to determine the amount of blood lost. Sometimes I recommend using a bowl for this very purpose.

Don't you read the instructions either?

I remember very well that rather long ago summer sunny day when I bought my first package of Tampax tampons. I carefully studied the instructions, looked at the pictures and for the first time learned about TSS - toxic shock syndrome.

This dangerous condition develops in women who use tampons during menstruation due to the rapid growth of colonies of Staphylococcus aureus. Fortunately, TSS is very rare and is thought to be influenced by genetic predisposition. The disease is associated with the use of super-absorbent tampons and prolonged exposure of the tampon to the vagina.

This begs the question: Is there still a risk of developing this serious and sometimes fatal disease when using menstrual cups? In 13 years, from 1996 to 2009, more than 100 million menstrual cups were sold worldwide. During all this time, not a single case of TSS was registered. The FDA received seven complaints from health care workers (difficulty removing the cup, vaginal infection, and allergic reaction) and two complaints from consumers (difficulty removing the cup). Of course, this allows us to talk about the high safety of the product.

Is this really convenient?

Women who avoid tampons are especially wary of the idea of using menstrual cups.

“The bowls are probably terribly uncomfortable. I tried using tampons - they were so disgusting! They get in the way, they rub, and it always seems like they’re about to fall out.”

A woman’s vagina is designed by nature to be curved in the form of a “shelf”. With the correct – deep enough – insertion of the tampon, it calmly “lies on the shelf” and does not move anywhere, does not rub or swell. A woman simply cannot feel a correctly installed tampon. If your tampon is bothering you, think: what are you doing wrong?

Women who successfully use tampons are less conservative and are willing to try a new “device.” They find sanitary pads completely uncomfortable due to the unpleasant feeling of “sweating” and the irritating smell.

No matter how “breathable” modern gaskets are, the moisture-proof film still creates a “greenhouse effect”, disrupting air and heat exchange.

The menstrual cup retains all the advantages of tampons: it allows you to wear panties of any shape and even (!) with forbidden laces. All bowls can be used during swimming and sports. Today, a new variety has appeared on the market - soft menstrual cups. They can be disposable or reusable (used within one cycle). Soft cups even allow you to have sex on “these” days.

It's not hygienic!

Many women are concerned about the need to process and sterilize an unusual device, they say: “It’s not hygienic!” It's actually not hygienic to wear one pad all day. In general, everything is not so scary.

Firstly, the bowl is individual. It’s definitely not worth letting a friend “wear” it. The frightening sterilization process itself is simple and straightforward. We are calm about sterilizing jars when canning at home or the need to sterilize baby nipples and bottles.

At the beginning of each cycle, you can boil the bowl in a saucepan or use a sterilizing solution, then simply wash it with soap and running water. Use clean hands to insert and remove the cup. The same rule is also true for changing sanitary pads/tampons.

After the end of menstruation, the product must be washed, dried and stored in a fabric bag (usually included in the kit). You should not wear the cup without emptying for more than 12 hours if the discharge is scanty. The common belief that a cup and a tampon “accumulate infection inside” is nothing more than a popular misconception. Nobody hoards anything. The tampon absorbs, the cup just collects. The tampon is changed, the cup is emptied. There are no savings planned here.

It's still something terrible!

Indeed, there are many women in the world for whom such close contact with their menstrual fluid is simply unacceptable, and the very thought of inserting an object into the vagina causes a feeling of disgust. This means that “eccentric” menstrual cups are not for them. Actually, it is some strangeness and unusualness that is the main drawback of the device.

Of course, there are also cases of allergic reactions to hypoallergenic silicone. A woman may also worry that she will not understand when the cup is already full and it is time to urgently empty it. Over time, users understand how often they should do this and do not experience much concern about “leaks.”

For a gynecologist, only one aspect is important - menstrual cups do not harm a woman’s health, therefore they can be a convenient, safe, economical and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional hygiene products. So, don’t be ashamed to recommend – try it!

Recently, menstrual cups have become especially popular. Such devices are a good alternative to conventional hygiene products, such as tampons and pads. In addition, a menstrual mouthguard helps maintain health, gives a feeling of reliability, confidence and comfort.

What is the product?

A menstrual mouth guard is a container that allows you to carefully collect menstrual fluid. For the first time such a device was created in the form of a bell and patented back in 1932. However, the products began to be produced in 1960. Menstrual cups were sold under the Tassaway brand. Initially, such products were not particularly popular among women, since many were not ready to use such a hygiene product.

Commercial success was achieved only towards the end of 1980. Initially, such hygiene products were made exclusively from rubber. However, many representatives of the fairer sex were allergic to such material. Therefore, manufacturers were looking for a way out. After some time, menstrual guards began to be made from medical silicone.

Main varieties

Menstrual mouth guards are currently available in only two types:

  1. Bell-shaped bowl. This feminine hygiene product is made from latex, thermoplastic elastomer or silicone. This type of bowl is designed for reusable use. However, some manufacturers recommend changing products at least once every 12 months, and some after 10 years.
  2. Cup in the form of a contraceptive diaphragm. Such a device is usually made of polyethylene. There are several types of such menstrual guards: reusable and disposable. The first type can be used for only one menstrual cycle. As for a disposable product, it is recommended to throw it away after the first use.

Is it dangerous

Why do you need a menstrual guard? As reviews show, this device perfectly replaces tampons and pads. In addition, the mouthguard is easy to use. Typically, instructions are included with such products. However, it will take some time to get used to such a cup: for many women it takes from 2 to 4 cycles.

At first glance, the menstrual tray seems very large. But do not forget that the product is inserted in a folded form. Of course, its diameter remains slightly larger than the diameter of a tampon.

For many, the bowl installation procedure may seem like a daunting task. This requires skill. The product is folded in several ways. Therefore, every woman can choose a convenient method for herself. When properly selected and installed, the menstrual cup-dropper does not cause any discomfort.

How much does the mouth guard hold?

The main feature of the product is volume. The cup can hold more menstrual fluid than a tampon. The product can collect from 25 to 37 ml of discharge. Not much menstrual fluid is released. This figure can range from 30 to 120 ml per day. The discharge is considered heavy if more than 60 ml is collected per day.

Features of application

The menstrual tray should be emptied at least once every 12 hours. When the product is removed, it must be thoroughly washed with clean water. It is also worth using neutral soap for these purposes. After this, the device can be reinstalled.

When the discharge stops, the menstrual tray must be boiled for 20 minutes. As for silicone products, it is not recommended to use anything other than soap and water to clean them. There is a risk of damage to such a device. With proper care, a menstrual mouth guard made of silicone should last at least a year.

What sizes are there?

Now you know what a menstrual guard is for. The most important thing is to choose the right product. At the moment, many products of various brands and from a variety of materials are produced. What type of menstrual guard can it be? Product dimensions may also vary. Small cups are mainly produced for women whose age ranges from 25 to 30 years, as well as for those who have not yet become pregnant or given birth. Larger items are also produced. They are intended for women over 30 years of age and for those who have become pregnant and given birth.

How to make the right choice?

The sensations that arise when using a menstrual cup depend on the correct size. The softness of the material is also of particular importance. You can determine the diameter and length of the product yourself. It all depends on the location of the uterus. If a woman can easily reach the cervix with her finger, then she should buy a short mouth guard. In this matter, everything is individual. A woman should be guided by her feelings. Most often you have to try several options from different manufacturers.

Based on reviews, the most popular are Yuuk, LadyCup, Meluna, MCUK, Diva Cup, Keeper Cup and so on.

A menstrual cup can be made from either soft or hard material. The last option is suitable for those women who have not yet given birth and have strong vaginal muscles.

Safety and health

When using a menstrual guard, the vagina works as usual: self-cleaning and moisturizing of the walls occurs. This reliably protects against damage and infections. It is worth noting that such products are made from natural rubber or medical silicone. Such materials do not allow bacteria to multiply.

In addition, menstrual trays do not contain bleaches, special additives or chemicals. This is the main difference between the products and other personal care products. For example, tampons are made from viscose or cotton fibers bleached and treated with special compounds. After all the manipulations, dioxins remain inside such products. These are by-products of bleaching. Such substances are cumulative poisons. They belong to the group of rather dangerous xenobiotics. It is for this reason that the use of tampons is dangerous to women's health. In addition, such products dry out the vagina greatly.

The use of tampons can trigger the development of toxic shock syndrome and also contribute to the growth of bacteria. Using a menstrual guard does not cause these side effects.

Is it convenient to use

The menstrual cup is a universal means of protection. It can be inserted into the vagina before menstruation so as not to miss its onset. This product can be used not only during the day, but also at night.

The menstrual cup does not interfere with active sports, as it does not cause bloating or cramps. Mouthguards are more reliable than disposable hygiene products. At the same time, nothing is noticeable from the outside. In addition, the products are not able to absorb moisture. This allows you to use a menstrual cup when visiting the pool.

When using a menstrual cup, there is no need to carry a spare one. Plus, you don't have to worry about the product falling out. This device is held in place by the smooth muscles of the vagina, as well as by the vacuum created by the cup.

Menstrual guard: how to use

Before using the menstrual cup, you should wash your hands thoroughly. To facilitate insertion of the product into the vagina, experts recommend using a water-based lubricant gel or plain water.

The hygiene product should be folded several times. There are several methods. After this, the cup should be inserted into the vagina in a folded form. The inside of the product will open neatly when used correctly.

When inserting the product into the vagina, you should relax. If you are using such a hygiene product for the first time, it is recommended to use it not during menstruation, but a little earlier. This will allow you to choose a more convenient method for folding and inserting the menstrual cup. This way you can avoid unpleasant sensations and discomfort when using the product.

C-shaped method

This method of administration is considered ideal for novice users. After all, it is quite simple. To begin, squeeze the cup with your index finger and thumb. As a result, it should become flat. After this, it needs to be folded in the shape of the letter C very tightly.

In this form, the menstrual tray must be inserted into the vagina. There may be some noise when unfolding it. To make sure that the product stands up well and is located high enough, you should touch its bottom with your hand. If there are folds on the mouthguard, then it is inserted incorrectly.

7-shaped method

This method of inserting a menstrual tray into the vagina is considered the most effective and convenient. First you need to compress the upper edges of the product. After this, you need to lower one of the edges of the device down. Now you need to roll the bowl again.

The menstrual tray should be inserted into the vagina. When it opens, a slight noise may be heard. Finally, it’s worth checking how the bottom of the bowl is positioned. It is enough to touch it with your hand. If there are folds, the product was inserted incorrectly.

Technical method

How to use a menstrual guard? The technical method of administration is suitable for more experienced users. The edges of the bowl should be concave, bringing the edges of the cut together. The product should decrease in diameter. The mouth guard is ready for insertion. Its small diameter will be maintained by finger pressure.

After insertion, you should check the location of the menstrual cup by touching it with your hand. If there are even slight wrinkles, then the product was inserted incorrectly.

How to extract correctly?

Menstrual guards, reviews of which are mostly positive, are not suitable for everyone. The most important thing is to know not only how to insert the product, but also how to remove it correctly. Before the procedure, you should wash your hands. After this, you need to feel the base of the bowl. However, it is not recommended to pull it. First you need to break the vacuum effect. It is worth pressing on the bottom of the bowl from the side, grabbing it with your index finger and thumb on both sides. After this, the product can be carefully and easily removed from the vagina.

What to do after extraction?

When the menstrual cup is removed from the vagina, it must be emptied and rinsed thoroughly under running cold water. At the same time, you should not use soap, even neutral. The water should not be warm, but cold, as hot water will clot the blood. This will make it more difficult to clean the bowl.

After washing, the menstrual tray should be boiled for 3-5 minutes. You can also use special tablets for these purposes. They allow you to sterilize your menstrual tray in cold water. The method of killing bacteria should be chosen based on the situation.

The product should be stored in a bag made of cotton material. Most often, such a handbag is included with personal hygiene products. It is not recommended to use bags made of polyethylene or hermetically sealed containers to store the menstrual cup. The bag with the product should be placed in a cool place, protected from direct sunlight. Otherwise, the device will become unusable.

Could there be any difficulties?

Using a menstrual cup requires certain skills. For many, this is an obstacle to using the products. When folding, the device can easily slip out of your hands.

The procedure associated with removing the menstrual tray from the vagina is quite complex. If it is removed incorrectly, the contents may spill. Therefore, experts recommend carrying out a similar procedure in the shower for the first time.

If the product becomes unusable

Like any product, the menstrual tray also becomes unusable. Why do you need to change it, and how to determine its unsuitability? The exact timing is quite difficult to calculate. After all, some products can be used for more than one year, while others can only be used for a week. In addition, personal hygiene products made from silicone can last quite a long time. Some manufacturers claim that their products have a service life of at least 10 years.

If the device is deformed or damaged, then it should be replaced. We must not forget that the menstrual cup is not a contraceptive. It should only be used for its intended purpose.

Not suitable for everyone

Silicone menstrual cups are not suitable for everyone. As reviews show, many women, when using such personal hygiene products, experience a feeling of discomfort and pressure on the urethra or rectum. For some, the suction effect is very strong.

Virgins should not use a menstrual cup, as the product can cause rupture or stretching of the hymen. If this method of protection during menstruation is not suitable, then it is worth considering a more familiar option: the use of reusable pads. They are safer not only for a woman’s health, but also for the environment.

Is it possible to save money?

The cost of a menstrual cup depends on the material from which it is made, the brand and model. Usually the price of such a product is from 1 to 2 thousand rubles. A woman uses approximately 180 tampons per year. A Tampax package, which usually contains 16 products, costs approximately 160 rubles. This is not the most expensive product yet. As a result, a woman spends about 1,800 rubles on tampons per year. A menstrual cup pays for itself quickly.

In addition, many manufacturers return money under warranty. In other words, if the menstrual cup does not fit, it can be replaced with another model without additional payment.

Surely every girl and woman has had to deal with the problems of discomfort and leakage that appear when using conventional tampons and pads during menstruation. However, today these products have been replaced by a unique product that was developed by experienced specialists.

This is a silicone menstrual cup that can relieve women of some problems and provide complete freedom of action on menstrual days.

A little history

Products intended for intimate feminine hygiene have been invented since ancient times. Some of their types replaced others and provided ever new opportunities to make life easier during critical days. Today it is quite easy to imagine an analogue of modern sanitary pads or tampons. However, not many people know about such a device as the menstrual cup, and the mention of it sometimes only causes surprise.

Interestingly, this device was developed back in the 30s of the twentieth century. A container designed to collect menstrual fluid was patented in 1932. In the 60s, these products were produced under the Tassaway brand. However, commercial success never came to them then. Apparently, women in those years were not ready to accept such a hygiene product. Menstrual cups began to gain popularity later in Western Europe.

This happened in the late 80s, when for their production, in addition to rubber, which causes allergic reactions in many women, they began to use medical silicone and other hypoallergenic materials.

As for Russia, even today the menstrual cup is not popular and is far from the volume of demand for pads or tampons.

What it is?

A menstrual cup, also called a mouthguard, is a container made in the form of a small cap. It is inserted into the vagina during the period when menstrual flow occurs.

The material for the manufacture of such a product is high-quality medical silicone, thermoplastic elastomer or latex. A menstrual cup can also be disposable. In this case, it is made from a certain type of polyethylene.

What is a menstrual cup for? Its main task is not to absorb menstrual fluid, as female tampons or pads do, but to collect it in its hollow container.

Product types

There are two types of menstrual cups:

Operating principle

How do menstrual cups work? Reviews from women confirm that the material from which such products are made is very mobile and flexible. Thanks to this, the container is able to take the shape of the vagina, and when it comes into contact with the walls, no injuries, muscle strains or irritations occur.

The mechanism of action of the cup used on menstrual days is that after insertion it is able to create a vacuum. The container, if positioned correctly, opens and fits tightly to the vaginal muscles. This ensures the tightness of the product on both sides.

Thanks to this, all the secretions are collected in full into the menstrual cups. Reviews from women also confirm that during menstrual periods they can swim in a pool or pond without any problems. After all, due to the tightness of the bowl, water does not penetrate inside.

Product selection

Today, several manufacturers produce menstrual cups. Reviews from women indicate that each of their products is slightly different in size. But in general, all menstrual cups are divided into two groups. The first of them includes products whose size is designated as S. It also corresponds to the markings “1” or “A”. The second group of products has size L, which also corresponds to “2” or “B”.

As a rule, the first (small) type of cups is intended for women aged 25 to 30 who have not yet become pregnant. Products with large sizes are intended for those ladies who have already given birth or have crossed the threshold of their thirties.

As a rule, these two groups are enough for each woman to choose the most comfortable product for herself. But what else needs to be considered when choosing menstrual cups? Feedback from women confirms that determining the right size of a product is a very individual matter. For example, the first group is recommended for those who have not yet given birth, have a fragile constitution and not very heavy discharge during menstrual periods. The second type of menstrual cups should be chosen by women who have already given birth, as well as those who have undergone surgical interventions on the genitals (including curettage and abortions). Size L is also intended for those ladies who have a large build or heavy menstruation. But sometimes even a woman who has given birth, but at the same time a miniature one, chooses the first type of cup for herself.

When choosing a mouthguard, you will also need to measure the height of your vagina. This can be done independently, but it is better if the woman seeks advice from a gynecologist.

How to choose a menstrual cup so that it is as comfortable as possible when using it? The size of the product is determined by its length and diameter. To determine the parameters of the mouthguard, it is also necessary to clarify whether the cervix is located high or low in the body. So, for women who can touch it with their finger, short cups are usually suitable. But all this, again, is very individual.

The appropriate menstrual cup size is most often selected by trying several options from different manufacturers. These companies adhere to the following standards:

  • the Czech company LadyCup offers large bowls with a diameter of 46 mm and a length of 53 mm, and small ones, respectively, 40 and 46 mm;
  • the Czech company Mooncup produces large products with a diameter of 46 mm, the length of which is 50 mm, and small ones, respectively, 43 and 50 mm;
  • Czech manufacturer Yuuki produces large products with a diameter of 47 mm and a length of 57 mm, and small ones with 42 and 48 mm;
  • The Finnish company Lunette offers large bowls with a diameter of 46 mm and a length of 52 mm, and small bowls with a diameter of 41 and 47 mm, respectively.

The choice of bowl is also made taking into account such an indicator as its softness. Products made from hard material are suitable for those women who have strong vaginal muscles, or those who have not yet given birth.

Menstrual cups are available with a variety of tails. These devices can be flat or tubular, in the form of a ring or a ball. And sometimes there are no “tails” in products at all.

Bowls designed to collect secretions on menstrual periods are offered by manufacturers in different colors. They can not only be transparent or white, but also have a huge range of different shades. What color should a woman choose? This will depend on her personal preferences. But it is worth keeping in mind that colored products will retain their aesthetic appearance for a longer period. But, on the other hand, this is bad, since it will be difficult to visually determine their purity.

Product Introduction

Instructions for use must be included with the menstrual cup. However, a woman will need a little practice in order to begin inserting the mouthguard on her own without any problems. In general, such manipulation will not cause any difficulties after 2-4 cycles.

Like a tampon, the cup is inserted directly by hand. You can first study this procedure according to the instructions, and also get acquainted with it through video tutorials. By following all the recommendations, you can significantly speed up the process and make your work easier.

How to insert a menstrual cup? First of all, you need to wash your hands thoroughly using soap. This will prevent infection from entering the body. Afterwards you will need to decide on a pose. It is most convenient to administer this remedy while lying down or standing, raising one leg on some surface, as well as sitting on the toilet or squatting. That is, how will anyone feel more comfortable? It should be remembered that the vaginal muscles should be in a relaxed state. This will make inserting the menstrual cup much easier.

At the next stage of the procedure, the product is moistened with water or treated with a water-based lubricant. Next, the mouth guard is folded in half. This will make it easier to insert it into the vagina.

After this, it is necessary to spread the labia with your left hand, and with your right hand, push the cup so that the tip of its tail is at a depth of 1 to 2 cm. If the product is inserted deeper, then some leakage is likely.

Next, the menstrual cup must be positioned correctly in the woman’s body. In order for this to happen and the product to take the required position, it must be rotated around its axis by the base. In this case, the material of the mouth guard, which softens slightly after entering the body, adheres tightly to the vaginal walls, preventing fluid from leaking out.

If the mouthguard is positioned correctly, a woman will not feel it when moving or changing position.

Product use

So, the mouthguard was inserted according to the instructions. What to do with her next? How to use a menstrual cup?

It is worth remembering that, unlike pads or tampons, the product does not absorb discharge. It simply collects them in its container. The physiology of the female body requires that menstrual flow should flow freely. A cup inserted into the vagina prevents this.

According to the manufacturers, the mouthguard can be left inside the body for up to 12 hours. After all, it will hold much more secretions than a pad or tampon. Typically, the capacity of a menstrual cup ranges from 25 to 37 ml. Some women believe that their discharge is much heavier. However, it is not. On average, the body loses from 30 to 120 ml during the day. And this is from 2 to 8 tablespoons. Moreover, a discharge of 60 ml is already considered abundant.

How to use a menstrual cup? As already mentioned, it should be emptied every twelve hours. However, in case of strong discharge, this can be done more often.

Extraction

You need to remove the mouthguard from the vagina by its tail. But it is worth keeping in mind some nuances. If you simply pull the tip of the bowl, the product will not budge. At this point, some women believe that inserting the container is much easier than removing it later. How should the cup be extended? To do this, first of all you need to wash your hands. And this must be done with soap. Afterwards, you feel for the base of the bowl, on which you should press a little with your fingers. Such movements will break the tightness of the mouthguard, which thanks to this can be pulled out quite freely.

It is worth remembering that a similar procedure is carried out over the toilet, because in this case the secretions collected in the container can be spilled. If the product is disposable, it is immediately thrown away. After this, another mouthguard is inserted. If the cup is reusable, then it is cleaned of secretions, washed under running water, washed with warm soapy water and dried a little. Only after this can the mouthguard be used again.

The mouthguard can last for 10 years. If it is reusable, then after the completion of the critical days, the product is boiled in water for about 15 minutes. Next, it is placed in a bag that allows air to pass through (it is usually sold complete with a bowl).

Before use, wash the mouth guard again with soap.

Negative points

Are there any contraindications for the menstrual cup? Despite the fact that this remedy appeared almost a century ago, due to its low prevalence, experts cannot give accurate answers about in what cases it is strictly prohibited to use it. Disadvantages of a menstrual cup:

  • the risk of the spread of pathogenic bacteria, which is provoked by stagnation that occurs when contents accumulate;
  • the likelihood of secretions in the mouthguard getting back into the uterus, which provokes the development of endometriosis;
  • the impossibility of using the product by virgins, since careless insertion of the mouth guard can damage the hymen;
  • the likelihood of discomfort in the anus and perineum;
  • the need to choose an insertion position;
  • the importance of quickly and carefully removing the product so that liquid does not spill out.

But even if a woman is absolutely healthy and the gynecologist has nothing against her using a menstrual cup, it must be borne in mind that some problems during the operation of the mouth guard are still possible. After all, its use will require certain skills. For some women, this sometimes becomes a serious obstacle. When folding, the bowl slips out of your hands. The procedure for removing it is also not easy, which sometimes leads to the contents of the container spilling.

But even with proper insertion, especially during the first time of use, the cup often causes some discomfort simply because it is felt inside. This shouldn't happen.

Another disadvantage of the menstrual cup is the price of the product. It is quite high, and purchasing the product will only become profitable if you use it for as long as possible. However, a woman may not always get used to the silicone container in her body or decide to change it as often as possible. In this case, purchasing the product will be unprofitable.

Sometimes it becomes extremely difficult to comply with the necessary hygiene rules when using a mouth guard. Especially if a woman is on the road, in a public place, in nature, etc. After all, after removal, the product must be thoroughly washed.

Advantages

What are the benefits of using a menstrual cup?

  1. Safety and Health. When using the mouth guard, the vagina operates in its normal mode. It is independently cleaned of secretions while maintaining moisture in the walls, which is very important for protection from damage and infections. The material for making the bowls is silicone or natural rubber, which does not allow bacteria to multiply. The product contains no additives, hazardous chemicals or bleaches. And this is where mouthguards are much better than tampons. After all, the latter are made from viscose or cotton fibers, which are previously specially processed and bleached. After this procedure, dioxins remain in the product material. These are by-products of the bleaching process. They are cumulative poisons classified as dangerous xenobiotics. In this regard, the use of such products is extremely undesirable for women. In addition, after insertion, tampons dry the vagina. Thus, they provoke the development of infections, as well as toxic shock syndrome. Many women have noted a decrease in menstrual flow and cramping after switching from using tampons to using a cup.
  2. Purity. The use of bowls is very hygienic. In addition, the mouthguard can be subject to additional sterilization. Due to the separation of fluid from the vaginal walls and the absence of air, odors are less likely to appear during use of the product.
  3. Convenience. Depending on the volume of discharge, the cup is worn for up to 12 hours. You can insert it before the start of menstruation, so as not to be left without protection on the road, in nature, etc. In addition, the use of a mouthguard is not prohibited at night. The product is great for sports activities, as it is attached very securely and discreetly from the outside. There is no need to carry spare aligners with you during menstruation. Plus, you don't have to worry about the product falling out. After all, thanks to the vacuum created, it holds very reliably.
  4. Saving. The price of a menstrual cup ranges from 1 to 2 thousand rubles. The exact cost depends on the brand and model. If we consider that a woman, as a rule, uses about 180 tampons during the year, then their cost will be 1,800 rubles. Thus, the mouthguard can pay for itself within the first year.
  5. Environmental friendliness. Over the course of a woman's lifetime, the average woman throws away about 16,800 disposable tampons or pads. If we consider that the use of a menstrual cup can last up to 10 years, it becomes obvious that its use will significantly reduce the volume of waste dumped in landfills, which subsequently ends up through the soil into sewer systems, seas and rivers. It is worth noting that in the production of pads and tampons, not only synthetic bases are used, but also wood, the production of which leads to deforestation. The manufacturing process of these products itself is associated with chemical processing of the resulting materials. This pollutes the surrounding atmosphere and requires significant energy consumption.

It is necessary to make a decision about using a menstrual cup only after all existing risks from using the product have been taken into account, and its benefits have also been considered.
