Everything is simple here too, in winter, crayfish move to deeper parts of the reservoir, where they also dig their winter holes or find refuge among stones, snags or other natural shelters.

Crayfish reproduce in the fall; to mate, the male finds a female, chases her, catches her and turns her belly up, after which he transfers his spermatophores to the female’s abdomen. As you understand, the male must be larger than the female in order for him to cope with such a difficult task. After mating, the female crayfish spawns eggs on her abdomen, which are fertilized by previously applied male hormones. The caviar, crayfish, is carried with it all winter under its abdomen, while the female tries to move quite carefully and constantly ventilate her offspring with fresh water.

Around June, when the water in the reservoir has warmed up a little, newborn crustaceans emerge from the eggs. The crayfish carries small crustaceans with it under its tail for about 10-12 days, after which the female parts with her brood and the small crayfish begins an independent life. During this period, when the crayfish is separated from the mother, the most difficult times begin. Any fish is not averse to snacking on small crustaceans, and most of the offspring die during this period. In the first summer of their life, small crayfish molt five times, during which time they double in size. And crayfish reach sexual maturity only in the third year of their life, and females only in the fourth. Crayfish live on average 20-25 years.
